Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and, if you are dining with others, the number of people. You get the tip, the total and what each person pays.

Tipping customs differ by country, and sometimes by venue. Treat the preset percentages as convenient shortcuts, and use the custom field for anything else.

How tip calculator works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people. Amounts are rounded to the cent only for display, so the split adds up correctly.

If a service charge is already on the bill, enter 0% or a smaller tip, depending on the local custom.

The formula

Tip  =  Bill × Tip% ÷ 100
Total  =  Bill + Tip
Each person pays = Total ÷ People

Worked example: an 86.40 dinner for four with an 18% tip

Tip: 86.40 × 0.18 = 15.55 (15.552 before rounding).

Total: 86.40 + 15.55 = 101.95.

Each of four people pays 25.49, of which 3.89 is tip.

When to use this tool

  • Splitting a restaurant bill evenly between friends.
  • Comparing what a 15%, 18% or 20% tip would cost.
  • Tipping on taxis, deliveries, salons and other services.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Tipping on a total that already includes a service charge.
  • Calculating the tip on the pre-discount price when you should use the amount you actually paid, or the reverse, depending on local custom.
  • Splitting evenly when people ordered very different amounts. Divide by item if that is fairer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.20. A quick way is to move the decimal one place left to get 10% and double it.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people.
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country and the type of service. This tool calculates whatever percentage you choose and does not tell you the local norm.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both are common. Enter whichever amount you decide to tip on as the bill.
