How hourly to annual salary calculator works

Annual pay is the rate times hours per week times weeks per year. The default is 40 hours and 52 weeks. If you have unpaid time off, lower the weeks, and if you get paid holidays keep it at 52.

Monthly pay is a twelfth of the annual figure. Biweekly and weekly pay come from the hours in the pay period, and daily pay divides weekly pay by the days you work.

The formula

Annual = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year
Monthly  =  Annual ÷ 12
Hourly = Annual ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

Worked example: 25 an hour, full time

25 × 40 × 52 = 52,000 a year, which is 4,333.33 a month.

Weekly pay is 1,000, biweekly is 2,000 and daily is 200.

With two unpaid weeks (50 weeks) the annual figure is 50,000.

In reverse, a 65,000 salary at 40 hours over 52 weeks is 31.25 an hour.

When to use this tool

  • Comparing an hourly job offer with a salaried one.
  • Estimating income for a budget or a loan application.
  • Converting a freelance rate into an annual target, or the reverse.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using 52 weeks when you have unpaid leave, which overstates annual pay.
  • Comparing gross annual pay across roles without accounting for benefits, overtime rules and unpaid breaks.
  • Treating monthly pay as four weeks of pay. A year has slightly more than four weeks per month.
