Recipes from different countries use different measures. Convert cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces and milliliters, in US or metric versions, and read the answer straight away.
This tool converts volume to volume. It does not turn cups of flour into grams, because that depends on the ingredient and how it is packed. For that, weigh the ingredient or use a source that lists its density.
How cooking unit converter works
A US cup is 236.588 mL, a US tablespoon is 14.787 mL and a US teaspoon is 4.929 mL. Metric measures, as used in many recipes from Australia, Canada and the UK, are rounded: a 250 mL cup, a 15 mL tablespoon and a 5 mL teaspoon. Both sets are in the list, labelled.
Australian tablespoons are 20 mL, so check the origin of a recipe if a small measure matters, such as raising agents or spices.
The formula
1 US cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 8 fl oz = 236.588 mL
1 US tbsp = 3 tsp = 14.787 mL
1 US pint = 2 cups · 1 US quart = 4 cups · 1 US gallon = 16 cupsWorked example: a US recipe in a metric kitchen
1 1/2 cups of milk is 1.5 × 236.588 = 354.9 mL.
3 tablespoons of oil is 3 × 14.787 = 44.4 mL.
A 250 mL metric cup is 1.057 US cups, so the two cups are close but not identical.
